So you may not have heard or seen the name Tegan Ptasznyk around but we are pretty confident that a lot of you would have heard or seen the name ‘filmgarden’ or maybe like this @filmgarden..ring any bells? If you’re on Instagram, chances are you’re following Tegan. She goes by the name ‘filmgarden’ quite simply because they’re two of her favourite things, film and gardens. Tegan is currently studying photography at uni and we can see why! She has a good eye for capturing images of beautiful scenery, flowers and her pet mice. Yes, that’s right, pet mice!

We recently sat down for a coffee and a few giggles with Tegan at The Stables Bar in Perth, and here’s what she had to say.

1. Who’s inspiring you creatively in Perth at the moment?

More like… who isn’t inspiring me lately?! Designers, stylists, makers, bakers, photo-takers…you all have a special place in my heart.

2. Winter or Summer?

How about Spring? I like Spring. Perth’s warm Winter sun is pretty great, though.

3. On your iPod?

Old school R&B. Lots of it. The good stuff. The real stuff. I’m pretty versatile though. I do enjoy soft, emotional songs just as much.

4. Current poison.

Quaint stores/vintage boutiques. I can’t seem to get enough of their unaffordable goodness.

5. What advice would you give your younger self?

You are the master of your own happiness.

6. Current favourite space in Perth to hang out.

I am really enjoying Perth’s cafe scene at the moment. I can’t say I have a particular favourite (yet), but I do like discovering new places. Also, if your cafe sells macarons, I’m there.

Thanks so much Tegan! We think your ace! If you’re not yet following Tegan on IG, check her out @filmgarden. Go join the other 8.5k admirers of her work! Here’s a little snippet of Tegan’s @filmgarden account…

If you haven’t heard the name Jarrad Seng, you MUST be living under a rock! Jarrad is one of Perths great talents. Over a coffee at Greens & Co, Jarrad told us how he started out studying law and now spends his days, camera in hand, traipsing the world alongside Matchbox 20, Ed Sheeran, Matt Corby and most recently Passenger.

This year has seen Jarrad selected as a finalist in the WA Youth Awards acknowledging his commitment to volunteering, leadership and the community. Congratulation Jarrad and thanks for taking the time out to chat with us!

1. Who’s inspiring you creatively in Perth at the moment?

There are so many peeps in Perth doing amazing and wonderful things, but some of my favourites that inspire me slash make me feel feeble and amateurish in comparison are Caitlin Worthington (master portrait photographer / candy crush slayer), Pippa McManus (fashion illustrator extraordinaire), Sarah McCloskey (unbelievable artist), Liam Underwood (videographer / globe-trotter) and Tim Watts and Arielle Gray (magical performers and general creative geniuses).

2. Winter or Summer?

I’m more of a winter wildling but after spending six weeks in European snow, a month in ICEland and then coming back home to winter in WA, it would be nice to remember what warmth feels like…

3. On your iPod?

My friend Olivia Gavranich (aka St. South) has been killing it lately.  Helen Shanahan, Sheryn Binks, Amanda Merdzan, Neda and Adriana Tegova are some other favourite local lasses of mine.  Ball Park Music and Sia are super fun.  James Blake and Bon Iver have accompanied my ears on many a lonely late night walk through strange European streets.  And in the car nothing beats the classic Curtin FM 100.1. I get a lot of shit for that but I actually do love it.

4. Current poison.

Nandos, my only weakness.  Peri-Peri sauce runs thick through my veins.

5. What advice would you give your younger self?

I would tell my primary-school self to ditch the bowl cut.  High-school self – don’t worry so much about grades and marks and all of that bullshit.  I mean, it does matter, but it doesn’t matter THAT much.  You can do anything you want to, son!  And most things in life that are fun you don’t need a 99 TER score to do.  University self – don’t doubt yourself and stress out about seemingly important decisions. Have faith that everything will work out the way it’s meant to if you just trust your gut and choose things that make you happy.  But maybe finish that last remaining unit so you can actually graduate.  Good call on dropping out of law school though, dodged a bullet there!

I would tell my one-week-ago self to remember to put water in the easy mac bowl before putting it in the microwave.

6. Current favourite space in Perth to hang out.

Does Nandos count?  No?  I like the vibe of creative people and spaces.  I always have time to drop by Pip’s studio at 140 William or grab a drink at PICA Bar and people watch from the beer garden.  My bed is a pretty comfy place to hang out.  You’d be surprised how much of my work has been produced whilst lying on bed eating cornflakes.

Thanks again Jarrad! Head over and keep up to date amongst the 18.3K followers Jarrad’s attracted on his Facebook page! Also be sure to check Jarrad out on Instagram @jarradseng. Below you can an amazing video of ‘Hearts on Fire’ by Passenger & Ed Sheeran filmed, of course, by Jarrad – it’s almost as amazing as his hair!

1. What inspires you?

Without trying to sound too deep I’d have to say vision… not physical vision but the vision to see a final product or outcome that you’re after & that’s not just in film but every area of life! Without it you can’t really aim for anything.

2. Winter or Summer?

Summer full stop, unless the Winter is overseas & involves snowboarding.

3. On your iPod?

Too many things.

4. Current poison.

White chocolate & macadamia cookies, they have & always will be my poison… mmmmm…

5. Something you can’t work without.

Good sleep the night before.

6. Favourite cafe.

Voyage.

Matt has an undeniable passion for capturing moments through film. If you’d like to see some of Direct Films’ work head over to Matts business page. You can also find him on Facebook  and on Instagram as @mattbetty, but for now he’s shared a favourite of his films below, so sit back and enjoy!

1. What inspires you?

Meeting and chatting with other creative people. I love having those lovely, babbling, excitable coffee meets! It always gets me feeling fired up, making plans and raring to write.

2. Winter or Summer?

Winter – long coats, homemade pie, running in the rain and warming up with a hot shower afterward, evenings in snuggled up by the fireplace with a movie or good book.

3. On your iPod?

The Love Club EP by Lorde. But sadly, the past two days the song stuck in my head has been Look At This Instagram by College Humor. I laughed because I am guilty of pretty much all of the Instacrimes in it.

4. Current poison?

The pear and polenta cake from Sayers in Leederville. Served with a dollop of double cream.

5. Something you can’t work without?

Warm feet, quiet (sometimes I am guilty of switching off my hearing aids to turn them into earplugs!) and a pretty outlook. My office windows face our once-straggly garden that I have since put a lot of love into, and now there are always birds to see.

6. Favourite cafe.

At the moment I’m crushing on The Tenth State in Crawley with their killer lattes and to-die-for brownie – not to mention their beautiful and unusual homewares and gifts. It’s very hard to leave with just a coffee.

1. What inspires you?

This is so difficult to answer because I find inspiration in almost everything! But I would have to say that when I flip through images of daily life in the 1940’s – 1950’s I get a little burst of new found energy, I am instantly adding things to my lust list to look for in vintage shops and I always find new hairstyles to give a go.

2. Winter or Summer?

Summer most definitely!

3. On your iPod?

I’m currently obsessed with a solo artist named Sucre, her album A minor Bird is liking finding the macaron…delectable! I also wake up every morning with Chubby Checkers ‘Twist Again’, it never fails to wake me up and start dancing!

4. Current poison?

Coffee…always and forever!

5. Something you can’t work without?

I can never concentrate without music..it’s a must!

6. Favourite cafe.

I love Studio Bomba in Leederville, the ladies who own it are too lovely, the coffee is amazing and they have the cutest goods around! (Can’t ask for more than that!)
